How to Get In and Out of a Kayak

Getting In
From Shore: 
   - Place the kayak in shallow water with the stern touching the shore or a stable surface.
   - Sit on the edge of the kayak seat, then swing your legs into the cockpit while holding onto the sides or paddle for balance.
   - Push off gently with your paddle or hands, ensuring your weight is centered.

From a Dock:
   - Position the kayak parallel to the dock.
   - Sit on the dock with your legs hanging over the edge.
   - Place both hands on the kayak to stabilize it, and carefully step into the kayak while lowering yourself into the seat.

From a Boat Ramp:
   - Position the kayak halfway in the water to prevent tipping.
   - Straddle the kayak, sit down on the seat, and swing your legs in.

 

Getting Out
At Shore:
   - Paddle into shallow water and align the kayak with the shore.
   - Swing your legs out of the cockpit and stand up while holding the sides of the kayak for stability.

At a Dock:
   - Paddle alongside the dock.
   - Grab the dock with both hands, stabilize the kayak, and carefully step out.

At a Ramp:
   - Paddle to the ramp and ensure the kayak is secure.
   - Swing your legs out, and use the ramp edge for support as you stand up.

Safety Instructions for Kayaking in Winter Haven Lakes

Wear a Personal Flotation Device (PFD)
   - Always wear a Coast Guard-approved life jacket. It's required by law in many areas and essential for safety.

Check Weather Conditions
   - Florida weather can change quickly. Avoid kayaking during storms or high winds.

Be Aware of Local Wildlife
   - Watch for alligators and avoid areas where they are nesting. Do not feed or approach wildlife.

Stay Hydrated and Sun-Protected
   - Bring plenty of water and wear sunscreen, a hat, and sunglasses to protect against the sun.

Know the Waterways
   - Familiarize yourself with the layout of the Winter Haven Chain of Lakes. Use a map or GPS to avoid getting lost.

Paddle with a Partner
   - If possible, kayak with someone else. If you go alone, let someone know your route and expected return time.

   - Include a whistle, a waterproof phone or radio, a flashlight, and a first aid kit in your gear.

   - The Chain of Lakes is popular with motorboats. Stay close to the shoreline and be visible by wearing bright colors.

    - Learn how to re-enter your kayak from the water in case you capsize. Practicing in a controlled environment can prepare you for unexpected situations.
